Peter Robert Vanderpoel
June 17th, 1939 - April 19th, 2019
"Chicopee, Peter R. Vanderpoel, 79, died on Friday, April 19 at St. Vincent's Hospital in Worcester. Born in Holyoke on June 17, 1939, he was the son of Andrew and Ida (Phinney) Vanderpoel. Peter proudly served his country in the United States Air Force, obtaining the rank of Master Sergeant before his retirement. He was a union carpenter for many years, primarily employed by Fontaine Brothers, and worked on many large building projects in the area during his career. Peter enjoyed working on his many projects, most especially building the family home on Beaver Lake in Ware and most recently the renovation of a 200 year old farm house in New Salem. He also enjoyed camping, being a New England Patriots and Red Sox fan, and spending time with his dogs and family. His wife of 51 years, Theresa (LaPearl), died in 2017. He will be deeply missed by his two daughters, Elaine Vanderpoel-Barrios and her husband Eliud Barrios-Maranon of Redwood City, CA and Lesley Vanderpoel with whom he lived, along with his 6 grandchildren, Andrew, Mia, Kiley, Amy, Amanda and Emily. His two sons, Robert and James as well as siblings, Peg Slate and her husband Ron of Granby, Eleanor Bascom of South Hadley and Richard Vanderpoel and his wife Althea of Bloomfield, CT also survive him. Besides his parents and wife he was preceded in death by siblings, Wilbur and William. Funeral services will be on Tuesday, April 30th at 11:15 am at Beers and Story South Hadley Funeral Home, 646 Newton St. Burial will follow at 1:00 pm at the Massachusetts Veterans' Cemetery in Agawam. Calling hours are Monday, April 29th from 4-7 pm Donations in his memory may be made to Wounded Warrior Project PO Box 758517, Topeka, Kansas 66675-8517 ."
