Philomena Meighan
February 8th, 1931 - October 1st, 2023
Philomena Meighan died peacefully at her home on October 1, 2023 on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina after a brief illness. She was 92 years old. Mrs. Meighan was born in Hartford, CT on February 8, 1931 to parents John and Francesca Pensiero. She graduated from Buckley High School in Hartford CT in 1949 and Central Connecticut University in 1953. She then went on to earn a Master’s Degree in Reading Education from Central Connecticut University. She worked as an elementary school teacher for many years and was named Outstanding Elementary School Teacher in 1972. In the latter years of her career she worked as a reading consultant in the East Windsor, CT school system. In addition to teaching, Mrs. Meighan authored a children’s book, a number of newspaper articles, and multiple poems and stories. She was an avid reader and an accomplished author. Her greatest joy was being a loving Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother. Mrs. Meighan was predeceased by her loving husband of 68 years, Neil. She is survived by her sons Dennis Meighan and his wife Kathryn of Naples, FL, and Martin Meighan and his wife Elizabeth of Cornelia, GA. She is also survived by her grandchildren Ryan Meighan and his wife Taisa of Smyrna, GA, Taryn Pray and her husband Bradley of Nolensville, TN, Patrick Meighan and his wife Stephanie of Lutherville Timonium, MD, Caitlin McMahon and her husband O’Brien of Chicago, IL, and Carolyn Ross and her husband Miles of Youngsville, NC. She had eight great grandchildren Brynn Pray, Harrison Pray, Charlotte Pray, Mila Meighan, Nora Meighan, Bodie McMahon, Reece McMahon and Gwyneth Meighan. The Funeral Mass will be held at St. Francis by the Sea Catholic Church on October 20th at 10:00 am. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Mrs. Meighan’s life. In lieu of flowers, please send any donations to the St. Francis Catholic School of Hilton Head, SC.
