Raymond Patrick Carey

Raymond Patrick Carey Ray was born 7 February 1956 in Berkeley, California, the son of James A. Carey and Beulah Green. He was the third child in the family, with an older brother (Charlie, 4 years older) and an older sister (Alice, 1 year older). A younger brother (Bill, 10 years younger) joined the family later. The family lived in El Cerrito, but moved to Pleasant Hill, California just after Ray was born. Ray was known as Patrick until he went to kindergarten. His teachers called him Raymond, and that stayed with him the rest of his life. He attended Fair Oaks Elementary from kindergarten through fourth grade. He liked to play in the local creek, participating in tricyle races in the backyard, going roller skating, and playing pirate by burying his dads tools in the back yard. He had a pet duck named Herkimer. After his younger brother was born, the family moved across town to 10 Kilgo Court, Pleasant Hill. Ray attended Strandwood Elementary, then Valley View Intermediate, and College Park. Ray grew up as a member of the Pleasant Hill II Ward, participating in Primary, Scouting and youth activities. Ray studied at BYU for a year before his call to a mission in Duesseldorf, Germany. This was an exciting time for him, as he learned the language and developed a love for marzipan. Ray worked for many years as a checker at the Safeway store in Martinez. He studied and became certified as an Oracle DBA, and worked as a database administrator in Atlanta, Georgia and Mesa, Arizona. He lived in Ravenna, Ohio with his brother Charlie while attending Kent State. He became a part of the Rootstown Ward and enjoyed Elders Quorum activities. His niece Michelle remembers him as a kind and generous uncle. For example, one Christmas she discovered two of the biggest wrapped boxes she had ever seen under her grandparents' tree. To her delight, the labels read that they were for her and her brother Adam, gifts from Raymond containing giant teddy bears! After returning home to help care for his elderly mother, Ray became a member of the East Bay Singles Ward where he made many good friends. In this ward he met the love of his life, Pam Fallon. Ray and Pam enjoyed many fun activities together. Ray developed a love for the temple, and performed temple ordinances for many of his ancestors. Ray lived a simple life, and enjoyed driving and working on his Datsun Z, and taking things apart to see how they work. A memorial service will be held Saturday, October 7, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. at the Pleasant Hill LDS Chapel, 555 Boyd Road, Pleasant Hill, CA.
