Raymond Denyer passed away July 19th, 2024 with his family in attendance at the William Child’s Hospice House. After 98+ years he passed peacefully in his sleep surrounded by love after a short illness.
Raymond was born August 22, 1925 in Detroit, Michigan. In 1929, his family returned to their roots in St. Stephen, New Brunswick, Canada. Raymond grew up there with 4 siblings. He dropped out of school in the 8th grade to work in a lumber yard to help support his family. In August 1941, he exaggerated his age and enlisted in the Canadian Air Force. He transferred to the U.S. Navy in August 1942, upon turning 17, after the US entered WWII. He fought in the Pacific theater, participated in the first wave invasion at Okinawa and witnessed the surrender in Tokyo Bay. Upon being discharged, he returned to Houlton, Maine to attend Ricker Academy, which offered a program to help veterans without a high school diploma. While in Houlton, he met the woman who would be his soulmate and best friend for 75 years of marriage, Jean Titcomb. They married in 1947. He was accepted to and graduated from Boston University with a Business Degree.
Ray and Jean settled in Freeport, Maine and had 4 children. In 1960, Raymond accepted an opportunity to work in Miami and attended the University of Miami. Ray received a degree in accounting and found his life’s work. He passed the CPA exam in one try, and moved his family to Winter Park, Florida. He retired from KPMG and at age 62 began a new adventure as the Controller and Real Estate Broker for Lee Vista Development. He enjoyed 15 years being a part of the Lee Development and retired at the age of 75.
Raymond and Jean built their dream camp on Flying Pond in central Maine in 1985. They lived half a year in Winter Park and half a year in Vienna, Maine. They had 4 children, 8 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Both had excellent health into their 90’s and lived a very active life. They rarely were away from each other. Jean passed October 25, 2022, leaving a shadow on his heart.
Raymond’s family wishes to thank him for the sacrifices he made to make the lives of other’s better. He was generous and kind, but remained a very private person. He was truly a gentleman, and others were better for knowing him. He had a life well lived, made the world a better place and was committed to an accomplishment each day.
Burial services will be held on August 9th at 10 am at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Augusta, Maine. Luncheon to follow at Augusta Country Club.
