Rev. Colin Gorman

Wilmore, Kentucky Rev. Colin T. M. Gorman, 91, went home to Heaven on Thursday, June 25th to be with his Lord and Savior, and his wife of 71 years, Mabel, who predeceased him on February 1st of this year. Left behind to mourn are his son; C. Marshall {Rebecca} Gorman, Freehold, New Jersey, his daughter; Gwenn L. {James A.} Talbott, Versailles, and his four grandchildren; Hannah E. Talbott, Versailles, Sarah G. Talbott, Colorado, Jessica J. {Bennett} McKenzie, Arlington, Virginia and Colin P. Gorman, Freehold, New Jersey. Colin is also survived by his sister, Priscilla {Glenn} Fisher, New Jersey. Rev. Gorman was born in Scotland on June 5, 1924 to Thomas and Christina Gorman. He came to the United States in 1938 and soon started working in the Navy Shipyard in Philadelphia. As a result, he met Mabel Hellings, and the two were married on October 30, 1943. When he felt the call to be a minister of the Gospel, Mabel supported him in returning to school to get the necessary education. Becoming ordained in the Methodist Church (as it was called then), he ministered in Prospectville, and a circuit of churches in New Philadelphia and Cumbola, Pennsylvania. He was called to be the minister of the Huntingdon Valley Methodist Church outside of Philadelphia in 1953, and helped that church expand and grow to its present size. He served at HV until 1974 when he moved to Bethlehem, PA and was the minister of Wesley United Methodist Church until 1980, when he was called to the United Mothodist Global Board of Ministry, Office of Finance and Field Service. In this position, he and Mabel would travel the country, helping local churches raise funds for buildings and budgets, and also working in Louisville, Kentucky for a year helping the Conference raise money for ministers' pensions. After working in the "Office" for ten years, he and Mabel retired to Ocean City, New Jersey, where they enjoyed life with their growing family. Both Marshall and Gwenn's families were growing, and they all enjoyed spending weekends, summers and vacations at the Shore. During 1991, the entire family worked adding a room onto the second floor of the house to accommodate the ten family members. Colin used his construction skills to help Marshall renovate an old Methodist church into the home where Marshall and Becky still reside. In 1954, a friend of the family invited Colin and Mabel to spend a week in a "remote" part of Canada, and the hook was set. Colin and Mabel, their children and grandchildren visited Shawmere in Lyndhurst, Ontario for the next 60 years. We all have wonderful memories of being "in camp" water skiing, fishing, tubing, going to auctions, and boating. Getting away from the hustle and bustle of life to enjoy family for a week, or two or three was enough to rejuvenate us all for another year. In 2002, Colin and Mabel moved to Buckingham, Pennsylvania, and lived there for eight years. In 2010, they moved to Wilmore, Kentucky soon after Gwenn and her family moved to Lexington. They enjoyed five wonderful years at Wesley Village, first in a patio home on the grounds, and later, as health dictated, in assisted living. The tremendous staff at Wesley made Colin and Mabel's latter years enjoyable and comfortable. In all of Colin's life, he was faithful to his Lord, a loving, caring and encouraging father to his family, and committed to finishing anything to which he put his hand. As a result, two extended families, dozens of churches and thousands of people benefited from his life. The world is a better place because of Rev. Colin Thompson Marshall Gorman.
