Richard "Rick" Van Coates

Mr. Richard Van “Rick” Coates, 67, of Indianapolis, Indiana, formerly of Amsterdam, passed away peacefully at home on November 23, 2019 following a brief illness with his wife Holly and his daughter Erin Jamison-Koenig by his side. He was born on November 26, 1951, a son of the late Willis and Eva Nell Coates. He was raised in Amsterdam, NY and was a 1970 graduate of Amsterdam High School. He went on to become a Supervisor at Industrial Knit Fabrics of Amsterdam before moving to Seattle where he owned his own property management business. Moving to Oakhurst, New Jersey in the early 90’s he was a senior manager for GB Ltd., a large commercial real estate property firm. Rick retired last year to Indianapolis to be closer to his grandchildren. He married Holly Vincent in 2015 in Bayshore, NJ. They enjoyed all they did together from household projects and sitting on the porch, to counting almost-kisses in Hallmark movies and finding a good burger. In addition to his beloved wife Holly survivors include his daughter Erin (Ted), four grandchildren, Elizabeth, Eleanor and Jack Jamison-Koenig and Callie Fraser. He has four brothers, James (Pat) of Brockport, John (Debbie), Bill (Angie), David (Lindsay), all from Seattle, Two sisters Barbara Coates (Joe Merendo) and Kathy Coates-Kreisel (Jeff) both of Amsterdam, NY. Four nieces, Laura Coates (Wade Muncey), Brandie Kreisel, Valorie and Julia Coates, two nephews; Spencer Coates and Ethan Kreisel. Rick was a loving, compassionate, and kind person, who always placed others before himself. His love for life and delightful sense of humor will be missed by all who knew him and all who will continue to love him and remember him. A Celebration of Life will be held by the family at a later date. Donations in his name may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, Memphis, TN or to Community Hospice of Amsterdam.
