Richard Gordon Franz

Richard ‘Dick’ was a child of the West, born in Colorado with a short stay in New Mexico. He had a deep interest in Western History as well as a love for Westerns. Is there a Western he never saw - we don’t think so! He played football in high school and then served in the military where he was stationed in Landsberg am Lech, Germany. He enjoyed his time there working with a young German soldier and an older officer. Later in life he returned and walked those same streets and sat in the old church that had amazed him so much. Upon returning to Colorado, he attended the University of Northern Colorado completing a degree in History and Education. It was there in Greeley, Colorado that he met and fell in love with Patricia ‘Patty’ Reynolds. They married and had four children: Jennifer, Joany, Jeffrey, and Jack. He worked first as a teacher and then was promoted to Vice Principal and then Principal at two elementary schools in Denver Public Schools. He also finished a Masters of Education. His commitment to both teachers and students shined brightly. Even with a full time job, as well as some part time jobs to support his family, he also found time to volunteer as a coach for his youngest son’s football and soccer teams. He was also active in supporting St Joseph’s Episcopal Church in many ways. A life of dedication to others. After his father died, he was able to retire early and enjoy time with his wife. They bought a house in Lake Havasu and had two homes, Colorado and Arizona. Another joy for him was the birth of his grandchildren: Levi Van Stedum, Jeremy and Jared Black. That joy continued with the birth of their children: Charlotte and Natalie Van Stedum; Leif Black, and Evelyn Black. He took incredible care of his beloved wife as she suffered from cancer. Her death in June of 2010 was a deep pain that he worked to overcome. He returned to live in Colorado to be closer to his family. Then, something wonderful happened. He found love a second time, being blessed by meeting Norma Blount. They were able to establish a wonderful life together, enjoying bowling, taking trips together, and just laughing and sharing their lives until Dick, at the age of 91, passed away peacefully surrounded by those who loved him very much! A wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, spouse, friend… a wonderful man to live on in our memories. In lieu of flowers, please support your favorite charity.
