Obituary Richard Eugene McCarthy of Fort Collins, Colorado was born in DeKalb, Illinois, on April 4, 1932, the son of George and Gladys McCarthy. He grew up in Rochelle and Oregon, Illinois. He attended the University of Illinois from 1950 to 1954, was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity, and played football for the Fighting Illini. He graduated from the University of Illinois with a major in Physical Education and subsequently served in the United States Army in Manheim, Germany. He rose to the rank of Captain in the Army with a specialty in transportation and logistics. One of his greatest memories was playing quarterback and traveling Europe for the Army team in Manheim. Richard worked as an executive for several transportation companies during his career and owned his own business, McCarthy Oil and Tire, in Dixon, Illinois. He was President of the Board of Education for Dixon Public Schools in Dixon, Illinois and founded the chapter of the American Cancer Society there. He loved sports of all kinds, including his favorite softball team in Dixon, the McCarthy Oilers, but most of all he loved his family. Richard died on May 7, 2018 after a long illness. He is preceded in death by a son, Thomas Tilton McCarthy, his parents George and Gladys, his sister Dolly and her husband Ben Kaufman, and his beloved dog Penney. He is survived by his family including his wife Marian of Arizona, former wife Anne B. Marco (Howard) and their children, son Craig McCarthy (Karen), daughters Mary Garrison (Tom), Sarah Belleau (Jerry), Louise Belleau (Roger), and Amy Stevens (John); and grandchildren Kendall Garrison (Dawn), Drew Garrison (Kelsey), Luke Garrison (Jimena), Nick Belleau, Elizabeth Belleau, Daniel Belleau (Shelly), Thomas Belleau, Tyler Stevens (Brynn), and Alex Stevens. He had six greatgrandchildren he adored: J.R., Sidney, Emery, Reagan, Bentli and Barrett. He will be dearly missed by so many others, including Connie, Greg, Robert and Kyle Wood, Bob and Kay Belleau, Marian's children in Arizona and others whose lives he touched. Special thank you to the wonderful and caring staff at Columbine West Health and Rehabilitation Center and Halcyon Hospice in Fort Collins, Colorado, for their care. A memorial service is planned for Saturday, May 19th beginning at 10:00 am at Timberline Church in Fort Collins.
