Ulrich, Richard G. "Dick", 78, of St. Petersburg, died peacefully at home on Tuesday, December 3, 2013, surrounded by his loving family. A native of St. Petersburg, Florida, Dick was born at Mound Park Hospital. He graduated from St. Pete High School, Class of 1953 where he was Student Government Treasurer and President, Varsity Swimming Co-Captain , and involved in the Key Club and Boys State. He was voted "Most Popular" in his Senior Year. Dick received his Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from Duke University in 1957. At Duke he continued his leadership tract by starting the Duke Drill Team and served as Captain. He was President of Phi Delta Theta, Wing Commander of ROTC, Arnold Air Society President and was tapped for ODK Leadership Fraternity. He was especially proud of his military service to his country, serving in the US Air Force Auditor General Far East during the Korean Conflict and obtaining an Honorable Discharge as Captain. Dick had a distinguished public accounting career and was actively involved in improving his community and profession his entire life. His early career began with Price Waterhouse, CPA's from 1959 to 1960. Upon his return from Korea, he worked with Canning, Wells & Salzer from 1960 to 1968. Dick was a partner in his own accounting firm, McKelvey, Ulrich & Gassner from 1968 until he merged with Gregory, Sharer & Stuart in 1993 where he served as a shareholder and actively served clients for the remainder of his career until 2013. He was qualified as an expert witness in multiple Florida counties and the U.S. Federal District Court - Tampa. Dick received his Certified Valuation Analyst designation granted by the National Association of Certified Valuation Analysts in 1999. He was a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants; member and past board member of the Florida Institute of Certified Public Accountants where he served on the Education Foundation Board of Trustees and was a recipient of the Presidential Service Award. He also served from 1998 - 2013 as an FICPA PAC Committee Director. He was a member of the National Association of Certified Valuation Analysts and the Institute of Business Appraisers. He was a founding member and past President of the Association of Eminent Domain Professionals. An active community and civic leader, Dick was a Past President of Suncoasters, Inc and the Festival of States; a member of the St. Petersburg Area Chamber of Commerce where he served on the Board of Governors. He served on several boards including the Young Women's Residence, First United Methodist Church, and Tampa Bay Research Institute. He was President of St. Petersburg University Club and the Polywogs. He was a member of Suncoast Tiger Bay Club, Dragon Club, Quarterback Club, Golden Triangle and a 52 year member of the St. Petersburg Yacht Club. Dick had a passion and great love for God, his family, his GSS family, Florida Football and Duke Basketball, Rays Baseball, fishing, hunting, nature and his many, many dear friends. He will always be remembered for inspiring other cancer patients as he battled his own disease with faith, strength and uncomplaining courage for 17 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Max and Esther Ulrich, and his brother, Max. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Shawn M Ulrich; his sons, Richard K. Ulrich, Christopher K. (Cydney) Ulrich, James M. Ulrich, and Braden T. Ulrich; his daughter, E. Melanie Ulrich; his brother, Robert L. (Barbara) Ulrich; brothers-in-law, David K. (Lisa) Meehan and Michael P. (Desiree) Meehan; his grandchildren, Christopher, Jonathan, David, Benjamin, and Julia; and many beloved nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend special thanks to his team of incredible doctors, nurses and staff, especially Dr. Richard Knipe, at Florida Cancer Specialists, as well as Dr. Larry Williams.
