Memorial

Robbie Jane Collins Hackney passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on December 13, 2019 at Legacy Heights Memory Care in Charlotte, NC. Born on April 23, 1922 she achieved the age of 97. Her parents were Robert Beaty Collins and Effie Pittman Collins of Charlotte. Growing up in the Elizabeth neighborhood she attended Elizabeth Elementary and was a graduate of Central High School Class of 1940. After high school she attended business college where she studied bookkeeping and accounting before beginning her work career. Later she met a young man named Wilson Hackney who was just getting out of the navy. After a courtship they were married on January 4, 1946 at Caldwell Memorial Presbyterian Church in Charlotte. They were able to celebrate 64 years together before the passing of Wilson on January 27, 2010. During those 64 years three children were born, Bob (Teresa), Mike (Gerry), and Linda (John). Also grandchildren Robert Hackney, Taylor Hackney and Amanda Wilson, great grandchildren Olivia Hackney, Trent Hackney and Jack Hackney. She had a younger brother, John Hill Collins who proceeded her in death along with numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. In the children's early years she was a homemaker. Later she became part of the CMS school system and retired as the cafeteria manager of Beverly Woods Elementary School. Once retired, it was time to hit the "open road" and spent several months traveling the USA at their leisure visiting every state including Alaska and Hawaii. They also traveled to Europe to round out their travel plans. For 20 years after her retirement, she and Wilson were able to spend their winters in Florida in the St Petersburg area. This was her mecca, able to spend time with their "snowbird" friends, enjoying swimming, riding bicycles, bowling and of course BINGO which she was an avid player. She would use her winnings to take Robert and Taylor to Universal Studios, Sea World and Disney World. Enjoying the warm weather, especially going to the beach on the gulf coast was one of her favorite activities. When they returned from Florida, she was still active at the Matthews YMCA in the "Sassy Seniors Exercise Class". Her famous statement was "getting old is not for sissies". Taking yoga classes and continuing to swim was her way of staying active. Part of being a Grandmother was being able to enjoy her grandchildren. She always had her folding chair in the car so that she could be ready to support the grandchildren at the soccer matches and baseball games. Her favorite spot was the backstop behind home plate for the Dilworth Little League games. Taking the boys to Carowinds along with their friends brought her a lot of joy. Since Amanda was her only granddaughter, she made sure to spend time helping her with school work doing flashcards to help with multiplication tables and spelling words because both Linda and John are deaf. Always there for Amanda when she needed help was her role as a grandparent. Even making sure she was there for her high school graduation. It was only fitting that Mom's memorial service is held at Providence United Methodist Church because 65 years earlier she had signed the register as a charter member along with other family members. During those 65 years she had many jobs to help support the church especially during the early years. She was a member of the Chipley Bible Class where she was a member of the infamous "Back Row". We want to thank the class for their cards and support even when she was unable to attend. After Wilson's passing Mom became a resident at Legacy Heights BTR at Ballantyne. It was there that she was able to enjoy 7 years of her life. Even there she was a BINGO winner and loved to sing and enjoy the activities that were provided. Everyone knew Robbie. We want to thank the staff at Legacy and especially her guardian angel, Teresa Hackney for making her life the best until the end. A service to celebrate Robbie ‘s life will be held Thursday, January 9th, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. at Providence United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends following the service. Memorials can be made to Hospice Palliative Care Charlotte Region, 7845 Little Avenue, PO Box 470408, Charlotte, NC 29204.
