Robert John Calder
March 31st, 1919 - July 9th, 2015
Mr. Robert John Calder, age 96, of Gloversville, died July 9, 2015 at at Mountain Valley Hospice in Gloversville, NY with his loving family by his side. He was born March 31, 1919 in Ontario, Canada, the son of the late Robert J. and Hazel Nellie Robinson Calder. He served in the US Army, honorably discharged in 1945. He was later employed as an Evaporator Operator by Milligan & Higgins of Johnstown for over 40 years, retiring in 1984. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. In his retirement he enjoyed doing odd jobs for widows in the neighborhood and always sought to lend a hand. In his later years he enjoyed the meals at the Gloversville Senior center. He was also proud of his Scottish heritage. Robert married Helen E. Borowski on September 17, 1943, together they shared a union of almost 60 years. She passed away on September 12, 2002. Robert is survived by daughter, Linda C. Gill (Jean) of Somersworth, NH and son Robert John Calder, Jr. of Sebastian, Fl.; grandchildren, Donald Calder of Johnstown, Elise Gill of Dover, NH, Elizabeth Gill of Brookline, MA, Michel Gill and Anne Richardson of Standish, ME and great granddaughter Lillian Elizabeth Gill who was born 7/10/2015 at 12:02am, with each passing brings new life. Funeral services will be held privately and at the convenience of his family. A special thank you to the Gill family for all of their care and support to help keep Robert in the comfort of his home. Thank you to Audrey for all you did for Robert and Helen. Thank you to all of the care givers who provided tender loving care for Robert at home. Also a thank you to Nathan Littauer Hospital, Wells Nursing Home & Rehab and Mountain Valley Hospice for the expert care and compassion during his time there. Heartfelt thanks to Dr. Brandis and staff for their continuous care, but especially in 1984 when they gave him the courage to give up alcohol and enjoy the fulfillment of his life. Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to the Lexington Foundation, 127 East State Street, Gloversville NY 12078 and Mountain Valley Hospice, 108 Steele Ave. Gloversville, NY.
