Loving Husband, Father, Grandfather and Great-grandfather!

Robert G. Cowan (Bob) 88, passed away on October 11, 2024, in Hollywood, SC. Born on December 9, 1935, in Hiram Georgia to Ella Mae Estes Cowan and Roy Virgil Cowan. Bob leaves behind his loving wife of 68 years, Mary Lou Milne Cowan. He is survived by his children, Barbara Ann Griffith, Rob Cowan, Rie Cowan and Gina Cowan (Kevin Sports), his granddaughters; Jena Bennett (Nick) Stephanie Smith (Fred), Kailyn Sports and his great-grandchildren; Ethan Nicholas Bennett, Jamison Robert Bennett, Valerie Brown and Andrew Smith. His life was a testament to dedication both to his family and his community.

 

Bob served in the US Coast Guard, stationed at Fire Island NY, proudly serving his country with honor and commitment. Following his military career, Bob was well-known began his professional life in the amusement and resort business. In the 1960's Bob was a part of enhancing Six Flags over Georgia with construction of the American Scream Machine wooden roller coaster and restoring the historical Carousel that still stands in the center of the park. Bob then moved his family to Pine Mountain Georgia and Calloway Gardens where he managed the maintenance and landscaping of this beautiful resort. In 1978, the Cowan's moved to South Carolina where Bob lived and worked in the resort communities of Seabrook and Kiawah Island. His professional life was marked by a strong work ethic and a passion for enhancing the leisure and enjoyment of others.

 

Bob was an avid painter of watercolors, finding joy and peace in capturing images of the Lowcountry of SC.  He reflected his love of travel in his landscapes showing places where he and Mary Lou visited with loved ones. His paintings are a legacy that he leaves his family to remember him by. His love for the outdoors was evident in his beautifully kept yard and the vibrant flowers he nurtured with care. He spent his retirement years working to plant crepe myrtle trees and azaleas to beautify his neighborhood of Stono Ferry. 

 

A Celebration of Life is planned for a later date where family, friends, and those whose lives were touched by Bob can come together to honor his memory and legacy.
