Robert William Ewen

Robert William "Bob" Ewen, 86, of Port Charlotte passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 14, 2017 at Tidewell Hospice. Born May 8, 1930 in Hamilton, Ohio to the late John and Louise (Meyer) Ewen. Bob was a multi-sports star at New Miami High School on Ohio. He worked for 36 years at Armco Steel Company in Middletown, Ohio and retired in 1984 as Superintendent of the Coke Plant. After snow-birding in Florida for several years, he and his wife, Opal, retired to Port Charlotte in 1996. An avid gardener, a season never went by without everyone enjoying tomatoes, string beans, peppers and squash from his garden or oranges, lemons, and mangos from his citrus trees. He was also famous for his yearly Christmas candy where several hundred "buckeyes" were hand-made and sent to friends and family near and far. He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years: Opal (Carmack) Ewen; two brothers: Ralph and Ron Ewen and one sister: Betty Ann Hill. He is survived by his three children: Barry (Cynthia) Ewen of The Villages, Florida, Terry (Joey) Ewen of Middletown, Ohio, Marilyn (Gary) Byrd of Hamilton, Ohio; his long-time companion: Dolores "Dolly" Shinaver of Englewood, Florida; three sisters: Myra Jean Flick of Fairfield, Ohio, Peg Hays of Appleton, Wisconsin, Mary Singleton of Westchester, Ohio; one brother: Russ Ewen of Seven Mile, Ohio; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held on Friday, January 20, 2017 from 1:30 PM until service time at 3:00 PM at the Englewood Community Funeral Home with Private Crematory, 3070 South McCall Road, Englewood.
