Robert Allen Godfrey, November 9, 1950-February 8, 2023 Robert Allen Godfrey was born on November 9, 1950 in Gunnison, Colorado. His parents were Charles and Phyllis Godfrey. He had one brother, Stanley. When he was a child his family moved to Leadville, Colorado, where he attended school and grew to adulthood. As a young man, he worked in many jobs including at the Climax mine. Bob was also a reporter for the Leadville Legend newspaper. Bob moved to Denver to work for and attend Metropolitan State College and he graduated with a B.A. degree in history and public relations in 1980. He continued to work for Metro until he moved back to Leadville and became the owner and reporter of Generic Publications. While there he joined the Leadville Lions and the Elks. Later in life Bob moved back to Denver, settling with his widowed mother in the Highland neighborhood of Denver. He worked for the Auraria Higher Education Center. Bob was passionate about running and joined the Rocky Mountain Road Runners club where he held various leadership positions and received four leadership awards. He completed four marathons and organized the 1986 No O2 10k race. Bob also helped organize the 1986 Pike’s Peak Special Olympics. Bob’s second passion was long distance bicycling. He participated in a number of long-range rides including the Elephant Rock Race. For the last ten years of his life, Bob gave much of his time to volunteerism. He served food at homeless shelters, delivered food for the Bienvenidos Food Bank, and helped out at Food Bank of the Rockies. Bob Godfrey died after a long illness on February 8, 2023. Bob lived by a mantra of care for others, give back, bring sunshine to any who cross your path. He bought and gave away tie dyed t-shirts that said “celebrate diversity” and passed out business cards extolling others to do good. His business card described Bob’s philosophy of life. It said “Life is a journey and is too short for aggravation. It is better to be understanding, accepting and patient of others. Strive to be your best and practice Daily Acts of Random Kindness to make your life sweeter. Peace, Bob G.” So, fare well Bob Godfrey. You were a good friend and we will miss you.
