Robert "Bob" Charles Granquist

January 16th, 1948 - March 24th, 2024

**Bob Granquist: A Life Remembered**

Bob Granquist, a cherished family man, esteemed veteran, and beloved community volunteer, passed away peacefully on March 24, 2024, in Newberg, Oregon. Born on January 16, 1948, in Oregon City, Oregon, Bob's life was a tapestry of kindness, laughter, and service, woven through with the kind of stories that could fill an evening without a single glance at a clock.

After graduating from West Linn High School, Bob's sense of duty led him to the United States Army, where he served from 1967 to 1970, marking his years with honor and distinction during the Vietnam War. His commitment to his country earned him several accolades, including the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Good Conduct 1st Award, and the Vietnam Service Medal. Post-military, Bob continued his life of service with the United States Post Office in Oak Grove, Oregon, delivering more than just mail but smiles, a listening ear, and often, a timely joke.

Retirement didn’t slow him down; rather, it offered new venues for his giving spirit. Bob dedicated over 12,000 hours to volunteering at the Oregon Zoo, a place he held dear to his heart. His love for animals, especially elephants, was evident not only in his tireless volunteer work but also in his whimsical large collection of elephant ornaments and figurines.

Bob's life was a collection of stories - those he lived and those he told. Known for his ever-curious, kind, considerate, and honest nature, he had a knack for trivia and a penchant for storytelling that turned simple gatherings into memorable occasions. His funny and gentle spirit made him a joy to be around.

He was preceded in death by his son, Marc, and will be lovingly remembered by his daughter Lyonie Sewell and her husband Daymond; grandchildren Tanner Granquist and SarahGrace Sewell; sister Dotta Jannsens; and an extensive list of relatives and friends who were all convinced they were his favorite.

Bob was a man who savored life's simple pleasures: watching old movies, traveling, going to the beach, and most of all, spending time with his grandchildren. Conversations with Bob, whether in person or over the phone, were always filled with laughter, learning, and genuine companionship. He cherished deeply his nightly conversations with his cousin, Vicki and his niece, Johnna.

A service will be held at Willamette National Cemetery, 11800 SE Mt. Scott Blvd., Portland, OR, on May 3, 2024, at 3:00 PM PST, with a car procession to the committal shelter. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Oregon Zoo would be a fitting tribute to a man who found so much joy and purpose in his volunteer work.

Bob Granquist may have left us, but his stories, his laughter, and his kind-hearted legacy will forever live on in the memories of all who were lucky enough to know him. Rest easy, Bob, knowing you've left the world a brighter place.

What was Robert's signature saying?

I LOVE YOU MORE! After we would get done visiting and it was time to say good-bye, he'd always say ... "I love you more". Then I'd say, "I don't think so!!". Then we'd banter back and forth about it until someone would say bye. I will miss those nightly conversations. I love you more Uncle Bob!
