Robert Edward Hewitt
January 20th, 1947 - April 3rd, 2023
Mr. Robert Edward Hewitt, age 76, of Winnsboro, SC, passed away on Monday, April 3, 2023. Mr. Hewitt was born in Warrenville, SC, on January 20, 1947, the son of the late Marvin DeLois Hewitt and Claudie Mae Hewitt. Mr. Hewitt graduated from Leavelle-McCambell High School and attended the University of South Carolina Aiken and Augusta College, where he played on the golf team. He served in the United States Air Force. Mr. Hewitt lived by the saying, “Good, better, best. Never let it rest until your good is better and your better is best.” This mantra shaped his approach to everything he loved, including his career, hobbies, and, most importantly, his family, especially being “Granddaddy”. He had a successful forty-four year career in the life insurance industry. Once referred to as “the walking Encyclopedia of Life Insurance” his life insurance career provided him the opportunity to live and work all over South Carolina and Canada. It also led to life-long friendships. While he enjoyed golf, he loved football, both as a high school player for the Graniteville Rocks and a lifelong fan of the University of South Carolina Gamecocks. He enjoyed cheering for the Gamecocks at home, away and bowl games. More importantly, he treasured spending time with his “tailgate family.” He was a man of quiet and private faith, but when needed he would pray for someone or teach a sensitive Sunday school lesson to a youth department. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Bennett Hewitt; his children, Ted Hewitt (Anna), Richard Hewitt (Chutnie), Anna Kay Lord (Derek); grandchildren, Meredith Hewitt, Amelia Hewitt, Camnie Fitzsimmons, Abbie Fitzsimmons, Lyn Hewitt, Bobby Hewitt, and Richard Hewitt Jr. and Moira Lord; stepsons, Will Preston (Dainelle) and Jack Preston; sisters, Mary Ann Langston and Nancy Kay Ruth; and first wife and mother of his children, Helen Watson Hewitt. A visitation will be held at 311 W. Liberty St, Winnsboro, SC from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM on Friday, April 7, 2023. A celebration of life will take place at a later date. He will be missed dearly by those who loved him but are comforted knowing he is well and in Heaven. The family would like to thank MSA Hospice of Camden for providing outstanding care and support. In lieu of flowers, memorials made be made to Earle Street Baptist Church, 225 W Earle St, Greenville, SC 29609 or First Baptist Church Holly Hill, 8455 Old State Rd, Holly Hill, SC 29059. South Carolina Cremation Society is assisting the family. Family and friends may sign the online guest book by clicking on the “Tribute Wall” tab above.
