Robert Lee Hunter

Robert L. Hunter, III, a cerebral historian of sequential art and one of America's most knowledgeable experts on 20th century comic books and graphic novels, died on March 4, 2024, in his home in Charlotte, North Carolina. He was 72. As an evangelist for Platinum Age, Golden Age, and Silver Age comics, Mr. Hunter began his collection in the late 1960s and amassed one of America's largest libraries of graphic novels and comic books from around the world. His relationship with the global graphic novel community is profound, and he often consulted with comic historians and up-and-coming comic authors on collection and book upkeep best practices. Mr. Hunter, born in 1951, leaves behind a legacy of accomplishment, varied academic passion, and love for his family. He is survived by his devoted wife of 49 years, Juanita Hunter, and his son, Robert Hunter IV. With a professional career spanning over four decades in accounting, marked by significant contributions to global organizations such as Deloitte, Saudi Arabian Airlines, Hoechst Celanese, and Duke Energy, Mr. Hunter's professional certifications included simultaneous CPA, CISA, CFE, and CIA licenses. Alongside his professional endeavors, Mr. Hunter was a lifelong scholar who taught university-level accounting and biblical studies, reflecting his commitment to promoting education and developing one's individual faith. His athletic pursuits included a passion for surfing and long-distance running, completing seven marathons, with completing his final race at the age of 63. Mr. Hunter's interests were as varied as they were profound, ranging from extensive travel to 53 countries with his family to gardening to performance automotive pursuits. Some of his most cherished memories were spent with his loving wife in Scotland, and with his son in Morocco and in British Columbia. He often expressed his gratitude for the warmth in his life from family members, and recognizes his cherished grandmother, Eliza E. Darden for her considerable influence in his life. In remembrance and in respect of his life and contributions, memorials can be made to the American Kidney Fund. Services will be private.
