Bob McCartney, 76, entered peacefully into eternity on March 2, 2013. Bob was born on December 1, 1936 in Shawnee, Oklahoma to Cleo and Dorothy McCartney. After stops in Texas and New Mexico, his family settled in southern Kansas where he attended school in both Penalosa and Kingman. Bob was a stellar student despite the many hours he spent working on the family farm. The family moved to Burlington, Colorado where he graduated high school in 1954. Bob attended Colorado A&M (now Colorado State University) in Fort Collins, Colorado where he was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1958. He served honorably in the United States Navy as an AEW Aircraft Commander in the Pacific Fleet until 1962. Bob piloted the Lockheed WV-2 Constellation as a vital part of America’s airborne early warning system. He continued his service to our country as a Navy Reservist until 1978. Bob had a distinguished 30 year career with United Airlines, retiring as a Boeing 727 Captain in 1996. Bob and his loving wife Barbara resided in Boulder for many years. He enjoyed golfing, camping, fishing and traveling. In retirement, he and Barbara enjoyed spending time at their second home on Blakely Island in Washington. He was preceded in death by his wife Barbara and his parents Cleo and Dorothy. He is survived by his three children by his former wife Dorothy Huggins of Loveland; Lori Weir of Arvada, Holly (John) Toomey of Littleton and Matt (Dana) McCartney of Fort Collins; his sisters Pat Sprague of Loveland, Nancy (Bud) Collier of Golden and brother Jack (Karen) McCartney of Lakewood and his six grandchildren Megan, Zach, Conor, Katelynn, Jake and Robby. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 am, Sat 03/09/13, Crown Hill Chapel, 29th and Wadsworth, Lakewood. A reception will immediately follow on site.
