Robert Avery Plyler, Jr. Robert Avery Plyler, Jr., 84, of Charlotte, NC died Sunday February 12, 2012 at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte, NC. Mr. Plyler was born August 10, 1927 in Wesley Chapel, NC and was the son of the late Robert Avery Plyler, Sr. and Rose Penegar Plyler. He was the oldest of five children. Robert graduated from Wesley Chapel High School and went on to attend North Carolina State University where he earned a degree in engineering in 1950. He proudly served his country during WW II and the Korean War. Mr. Plyler had the rare experience of serving, not only in two wars, but also in two different branches of the military, both the Army and the Navy, spending time in Japan and the Philippines. He married Margaret Marian Wikle on December 29, 1957 and moved to Charlotte, NC where they raised their three daughters. Mr. Plyler worked as a control chemist for Barnhardt Manufacturing for most of his career. Robert was a faithful member of the Presbyterian Church where he served as a Sunday school teacher, elder, and deacon. His grandparents were founding members of Siler Presbyterian Church in Wesley Chapel where he attended as a child and young adult. He was most recently a member of First Presbyterian Church in Charlotte, NC. Mr. Plyler was an avid stamp collector and shared his love of stamp collecting with his children, grandchildren and friends. Mr. Plyler was a loving and devoted father, grandfather, and brother. Robert is survived by his wife Margaret Wikle Plyler of Charlotte, NC; three daughters, Mrs. Laurie P. Maultsby and her husband, Stephen of Belmont, NC, Mrs. Amy P. Stefanou and her husband, Nicholas of Hendersonville, NC, and Ms. Emily B. Plyler of Atlanta, GA; sister, Mrs. Jeannette Helms of Charlotte, NC; brothers, Mr. Minor E. Plyler Sr. of Matthews, NC and Mr. Douglas M. Plyler of Wesley Chapel, NC; grandchildren, Sarah A. Maultsby of McAdenville, NC and Todd R. Maultsby of Belmont, NC; and eight nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, Lynn W. Plyler of Rock Hill, SC. The family wishes to express their sincere thanks to the staff at Southminster Retirement Community for their unwavering dedication to Mr. Plyler, and to Veronica Sayin, of Partners in Care, for her support and kindness through the years. A memorial service will be held at 1 PM on Saturday, February 18, 2012, at Siler Presbyterian Church, 6301 Weddington-Monroe Road in Wesley Chapel, NC. The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall following the service.
