Mr. Robert J. Schoonmaker Jr; age 93, of Gloversville, died Monday, June 23, 2014 at Mountain Valley Hospice Gloversville. He was born February 10, 1921 in Granville, NY, the son of the late Robert Sr. and Edith Hill Schoonmaker. He attended Oswego Extension School and the University of Illinois. Bob served his country faithfully in the Air Force from 1942 to 1945 in the Southern Philippines and Western Pacific Theaters. He served in the 499th Bombing Squadron in the 345th Bombardment Group. He was a self-employed building contractor for the majority of his life, operating as R. Schoonmaker & Son, and was well-known for his quality experience and craftsmanship. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and traveling. Bob was a member of Foothills United Methodist Church, where he was Treasurer of the former Fremonters. He was also a former member of Pine Tree Rifle Club and the NRA. He was predeceased by his wife, Marjorie R. Dutcher Schoonmaker, who died May 1, 2012. They were married for nearly 62 years. Bob is survived by two sons: Mark J. Schoonmaker of Guilderland and Peter R. Schoonmaker (Christine) of Gloversville; two grandchildren: Jordan Schoonmaker (Christina) and Heather Felde (Daniel); a great-grandson, Jordan Schoonmaker, and a cousin. In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by a brother, William J. Schoonmaker. The family will receive relatives and friends from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday, June 27th at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St; Gloversville, where a funeral service will follow at 11:00 am. Private interment will take place at a later time at Broadalbin Mayfield Rural Cemetery, Broadalbin. Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to Mountain Valley Hospice, 108 Steele Avenue, Gloversville, NY 12078.
