Robert McCullogh Whyel

On the morning of June 28, 2019, Robert McCullough Whyel, passed away at the age of 67. Robert was born September 1951 in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania to Bill and Elaine Whyel. He graduated in 1969 from Blue Ridge School in Charlottesville, VA and he received his Bachelor of Science degree from New Mexico State University in 1975. After college Robert worked in various jobs and then began his career with the government as a County Supervisor with USDA Farmer's home in Lovington, New Mexico in 1976. Later, Robert became Vice President with Farm Credit Services of New Mexico, then a Residential Review Appraiser for the Department of Veteran Affairs and a Supervisor Realty Specialist overseeing the rehabilitation, management, marketing and sale of all of the VA acquired properties in the VA Property Management Program in New Mexico, until all of these particular services within the VA were privatized. Robert always had a passion for the outdoors and animals. As a boy he loved working on his family's farm and as a teenager he spent many summers on his family's ranch in Wyoming. At a young age he discovered his love for hunting and enjoyed hunting large and small game with his dog by his side. He also enjoyed fishing and had several opportunities to experience deep sea fishing in which he came home with some exceptional catches. Robert was an avid gardener and enjoyed growing green chiles, tomatoes, pumpkins, squash, and peas and carrots to name a few. More than anything he loved spending time in the mountains with Marianne and their dogs, he loved to visit his daughter Sarah, in California, and her husband, Nick, and was devoted to his young grandsons, Luke and Matthew. Robert was preceded in death by his father, Bill, and his mother Elaine. He is survived by his daughter and son in law, Sarah and Nick, his grandsons, Luke and Matthew, Marianne, and several cousins. A funeral service will be held on Monday, July 29th, 2019 at the Riverside Funeral Home of Albuquerque at 1pm. In lieu of flowers please make donations to Animal Humane New Mexico.
