Robert O. Wolf, cherished husband, father, brother, grandfather, and esteemed member of his community, passed away peacefully on February 4, 2024, at Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, DC, at the age of 98. He was born on March 14, 1925, in Mansfield, OH, to the late Clarence F. Wolf and Rebekah Stull Wolf. Robert is survived by his beloved wife, Carol, his loving children Rebecca and Thomas, his brother, Reverend James B. Wolf, and his two grandchildren, Robert and Kathrena. Robert’s journey was marked by a commitment to service, learning, and a deep sense of purpose. During World War II, Robert honorably served his country in the US Navy, demonstrating his unwavering dedication to his nation. After the war, he graduated from North Central College (BA, 1950) and later pursued his studies at the Ohio State University (MA, 1952 and DDS, 1958). In 1958, Robert embarked on a distinguished career in the Public Health Service. He conducted his dental internship in New Orleans, LA, then moved to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), where his research contributed significantly to both public health and individual patients. His passion for science was matched only by his dedication to family and community. Robert was a life member of the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club, finding joy in the great outdoors, leading hikes, participating in cabin work-trips, and serving as President (1974-1975). Additionally, he lent his tenor voice to the Oratorio Society of Washington, sharing his passion for classical choral music with others. For many years, Robert called Bethesda, MD his home. In 2017, he and Carol found a new sense of belonging at the Knollwood Life Plan Community in Washington, DC. Throughout his life, he remained a beacon of calm and optimism, providing strength and guidance to those around him. His motto “Everything in moderation, even moderation,” sums up his balanced approach to life and his enduring wisdom. Above all, Robert was a man deeply loved by his family, friends, and all who knew him. His passing leaves a void that can’t be filled, but his memory will continue to inspire and guide those who were fortunate enough to have known him. A private ceremony will occur at Arlington National Cemetery in honor of Robert’s service to his country. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Appalachian Trail Conservancy (appalachiantrail.org) in Robert’s honor. Rest in peace, dear Robert. Your legacy of love and service will live in our hearts forever.
