Rodney Robert Thomson

Rodney Robert Thomson, 46, died Monday, February 16, 2015 at St. Luke’s Medical Center in Meridian, Idaho, after a courageous battle with kidney cancer. He was born July 13, 1968 to Robert and Lela (Mathias) Thomson in Caldwell, Idaho. He attended school in Caldwell and Notus and was active in Future Farmers of America, where he held state office and won numerous awards. He graduated from Notus High School in 1986. From 1986 to 1996, Rod was proud to serve alongside his dad and brother as a firefighter with the Notus Volunteer Fire Department. His lifelong passion for learning culminated in two college degrees, one from Boise State University in 1995, and one from Northwest Nazarene University in 2000. Rod enjoyed history, fishing, and sports, and always included rescued animals as part of his family. He loved conversation and debate, and never missed an opportunity to discuss current events or talk about Bronco football. After graduating, he worked with students in classrooms across the Treasure Valley. He continued helping others through his employment with home health and mental health agencies. Together with his brother, he cared for his parents through numerous health crises, always considering their needs ahead his own. Even after his cancer diagnosis, he continued worrying about the needs of others. When praised for his longstanding service to community and family, he would shrug off the compliment, saying he was just too stubborn to give up. Rod was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents. He is survived by his brother, Randy Thomson, his cousins and their families, and a close-knit community of friends. A Memorial potluck will be held on Sunday, March 1, 2015 at 1:00pm at the Notus Community Center. Interment will be held at a later date at Canyon Hill Cemetery in Caldwell.
