Gate City, VA – Roland Dewayne Palmer, 94 of Gate City, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, November 14, 2018 at Holston Valley Medical Center following an extended illness. Born in Richmond, IN, he had lived in the Kingsport area for most of his life. He was a U.S. Navy veteran having served during WWII. Roland was a member of Copper Creek Primitive Baptist Church, enjoyed life very much and never met a stranger. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary J. Palmer. Roland is survived by his wife of 16 years, JoAnn Stapleton Palmer; daughters, Susan Chandler and husband Robert and Patty Hutchens and husband Mark; sons, William Smith and wife Lisa and David Palmer and wife Diane; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Friday, November 16, 2018 at Scott County Funeral Home. Family and friends may also call anytime at the residence. A funeral service will follow at 7 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Elder Harmon Willis, Pastor Mike Stout and Brother Rex McMurray officiating. Music will be provided by the Copper Creek Singers and Ruth Click. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Oak Hill Memorial Park. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the funeral home at 1 p.m. to go in procession to the cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital, 950 W Farris Road, Greeneville, SC 29605. Carter-Trent/Scott County Funeral Home, Weber City is serving the Palmer family.
