Ruth Marshall Porter Hood, age 87, passed away on Saturday, February 25, 2017. Ruth was born on May 11, 1929 in Charlotte, NC and grew up in the Dilworth and Latta Park sections of town. She was married for 62 years to the late Dr. Christopher Hood, and was the daughter of the late Charles Porter and Corille Avant Porter. Ruth was a graduate of Central High School and received a B.A. in Religion and Philosophy from Queens College. Ruth and Chris lived in Philadelphia, PA, Denver, CO, Atlanta, GA and Columbia, SC during Chris' time in medical school, his internship, residency and Army service. They returned to Charlotte where she was a homemaker, and mother. Ruth's life was forever changed by a near fatal car accident in 1965. She struggled physically to overcome the serious injuries she sustained, and the many surgeries that followed. Through it all, she never let it stop her from being a great mother to her four children. Ruth is survived by her daughter Amy Hood, and her sons, Dr. Renwick Hood (Anne); Coleman Hood (Carol Jeanne); Timothy Hood (Sherry). She is also survived by her sister Carolyn Darnell (Ira G.); and her brother Dr. Charles Alexander Porter Jr. (Marilyn). Ruth is survived by her nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 2:00PM Sunday, March 5, 2017 at Sardis Presbyterian Church 6100 Sardis Road, Charlotte, NC 28270, with visitation immediately following in the church. Interment will be private.
