Sam H. McLain Jr, 72, of Surgoinsville, passed away Friday (August 7th, 2015) after a long battle with Leukemia at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center. A native of Hawkins County, he proudly served the people of Surgoinsville in public office for many years. He retired from Tennessee Eastman after many years of service; and was a member of the Tennessee National Guard. He was a member of the Overmountian Men Chapter of the Sons Of The American Revolution. He served the Lord as deacon and trustee at First Baptist of Surgoinsville. He also went on several foreign mission trips helping to build churches. Sam was preceded in death by his parents, Sam H. McLain Sr and Margie Ester McLain; brother, Max McLain and sister, Barbara Israel. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Peggy McLain; two sons, Sam H. McLain III and wife Elizabeth and Jason McLain; grandson, Jackson McLain and granddaughter, Katie McLain; two brothers, Joe McLain and wife Donna and Phillip McLain and wife Carla; sister, Patsy Davis and husband Arnold; and brother in law, Dr. Ray Israel and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 4 until 7pm Monday (August 10th, 2015) at Carter-Trent Funeral Home, Church Hill. A service will follow at 7pm with Pastor Tecky Hicks officiating. A graveside service will be conducted at 11am Tuesday (August 11th, 2015) at Holston View Cemetery. The Overmountain Men Chapter of the Sons of The American Revolution will serve as pallbearers and give a presentation in honor of Sam. The Tennessee National Guard will provide the American flag. Those who plan to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the cemetery at 10:45am. In lieu of flowers, it would please the family if donations were made to St. Jude Childrens Hospital.
