Samuel "Sam/Carroll/Hoss" Werner, 93, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, passed away on September 23, 2022 surrouded by his loving family. Samuel was born on April 10, 1929 to Samuel & Edena Mae Werner in San Antonio, Texas. After high school Sam joined the Navy and spent 4 years on the USS Valley Forge. Aboard his ship, he excelled in morse code, radio operations, and quickly climbed the hierarchy level. After his time aboard ship he became a Communications Officer at Fort Sam Houston. From there, he later started working for NORAD in Colorado Springs, Colorado as a Warning Center Officer. His natural talent, selflessness, and natural-born leadership propelled him to move up the rankings to an Officer, and he later even received accommodations from president Jimmy Carter. He retired from his Federal Government job in 1985. During the same time he served 47 years as a Naval Reserve Officer. He retired from the Navy in 1989. Outside of his career life, Samuel Werner was a loving and devoted husband for 68 years to June Werner, an amazing, patient father to their two daughters Holly Werner and Lisa Schubert. He was an incredible, doting grandfather to Lisa and David’s children Paul and Madison Schubert, devoting his retirement to playing with toys, pushing them on swings, and just being their fun loving wonderful grandpa. Samuel was a very humble man, unaware himself of just the impact he held over his family. He requested no funeral services be held and didn't talk much about his life as he thought he would be considered too "showy". He was an animal lover, who loved going camping with his grandkids and hunting with their dad. He described his success with humorous stories of luck, “Once I got into the Navy, the series of fortunate events were unbelievable. There was a 100 yard Freestyle Swim test that I had to pass, yet I didn’t know how to swim. I dove in anyway and I don’t believe I took one breath the whole time, but I passed.” (Samuel Werner.) This “dive right in” mentality, he of course passed along to his descendants who remember him in very fond regards and close proximity to their hearts. Anyone who knew Sam knew that he was the most loving father and husband a family could ask for and loved his family so fiercely. Sam was predeceased in death by his sister Mary, his mom and dad, his brother James. He is survived by his wife June, Sister Sudie, daughters Holly & Lisa, son in law Dave Schubert, grandchildren Paul & Madison Schubert and step grand daughter Alex as well as granddaughter in law Kirsten.
