Sarah L. Givens was born June 24, 1931, to the late Andrew and Betsy Thomas in Montrose, GA. Sarah moved to Elmira, NY from Montrose, then Syracuse, NY where she lived for over 40 years until she moved to Smiths Station, AL in 2002. Sarah worked at Patrick’s Cleaners and Smith Corona before joining General Motors where she worked faithfully until her retirement in 1992. Sarah never met a stranger and her home was warmly referred to as “Big Mama’s House” because there was always lots of people, food and entertainment. Sarah loved playing cards, bingo and to go to the casino whenever she could get someone to go with her. Her favorite pastime was fishing whether she caught anything or not. Sarah was predeceased by her 3 children, Henry Jr., Marchita and Lucille Givens and late husband Henry Givens Sr., 4 grandchildren, Dion Spaights, Simone, Charles and Malcolm Givens, 3 great-grandchildren Marquell and Dion Givens and Lavon Spaights Jr., 2 sisters Lelia Thomas and Martha Burke (Johnny), 3 brothers, Larry and Robert Thomas and Charles Hughes (Gloria), 1 son-in-law, Daniel Botd and 1 daughter-in-law, Darlene Givens. brothers-in-law, Ollie Slates and Frank and Pete Givens, sisters-in-law Dolly Wells and Silla and Nellie Givens. Sarah leaves to mourn her death, Addie Boyd and Mack Givens od Smiths Station, AL. Diane Vanessa, Julie, Barbara and Calvin (Deb) Givens of Syracuse, NY. 2 sisters, Willa Slates of Adrian, MI. and Mattie Thomas of Atlanta, GA. 2 brothers, Andrew (Liz) and Claude Thomas of Syracuse, NY. Brother-in-law, Walter Dennard of Riverdale, GA. 2 sisters-in-law, Bernice Thomas of Syracuse, NY. And Ruby Wlls of Elmira, NY. 36 grandchildren and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces nephews, cousins and friends. Special family members, Rene and Margaret Thomas, Paula Dennard, Charise Thomas, Jerry Turner and Billy Rice. Calling hours will be held from 10 AM to 12 PM on Friday October 4th at Greater New Testament Baptist Church 1121 S. Salina St. Syracuse, NY. with a funeral service immediately following at 12 PM. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery. JAN MALOFF FUNERAL DIRECTOR
