Satish Chandra Prasad
April 1st, 1944 - January 18th, 2017
Satish Chandra Prasad, PhD, 72, passed away in DeWitt, NY on January 18, 2017. Dr. Prasad was born in India in the state of Bihar in 1944, the tenth of thirteen children of High Court Justice Shib Chandra Prasad and Sitapati Devi. In 1970 he married Jayshri Sahay and is survived by his wife; three daughters Monica Prasad Hayes, Anita Prasad Lemieux, and Sunita Prasad; sons-in-law Charles N. Hayes, Cliffard P. Lemieux, and Christopher J. King; granddaughters Malia Lemieux, Paige Hayes, Penelope Hayes, and Sofia Lemieux; as well as a large beloved circle of extended family and friends. Dr. Prasad completed a BS and MS in Physics in India, at Patna Science College and Delhi University respectively, before emigrating to the United States to pursue an MS and PhD in High Energy Physics at the University of Massachusetts, which he completed in 1972. He went on to do post-doctoral research at the University of Rochester, followed by a third MS in Medical Physics at the University of Colorado. He began his career as a Radiation Physicist at the Mallinckrodt Institute at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, MO. He and his family settled in the Syracuse area when he joined the faculty of SUNY Upstate Medical University in 1981, where he carried out research in Radiation Oncology physics, provided clinical support in Radiation Oncology treatments, and taught Resident physicians and Radiation Therapy students before retiring as full Professor in 2010. He authored two books, On Human Dilemma and Review of Radiation Oncology Physics. Remembered for his unassuming generosity, singular sense of humor and deep commitment to family and community, Dr. Prasad was an active member of the local Indian cultural association ICRCC, as well as a Fellow of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine and a Diplomat of the American College of Radiology. A memorial ceremony will be held for Dr. Prasad on Sunday, January 22, 2017 at 10AM at Dewitt Community Room,148 Sanders Creek Pkwy, East Syracuse, NY 13057. All are welcome. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Food Bank of Central New York.
