Shanay Toya Cook, 28 of SC transitioned on Saturday, October 10, 2020 at MUSC Hospital of Charleston. She was born in Bronx, NY on June 1, 1992 to Timothy Cook and Karen Wright. She was a sweet, quiet, loving baby. She graduated from Fort Dorchester High School in 2011. She completed her studies while battling Sickle Cell Anemia and attended Trident Community College in North Charleston for a short time majoring in Graphic Arts. Shanay had talent drawing and painting. She used to color pictures to get her mind off her chronic pain. She loved learning about animals. We had numerous pets throughout her life. But most of all she loved her cats. Jayda was her love for many years. When Jayda died, Shanay fostered kittens. She became a foster failure because she kept every kitten – Sassy, Ebony and Ivory were her current babies. She loved attending music concerts, plays, amusement parks and movies. She belonged to The Sickle Cell Sisters of MUSC Hospital. (A group of teenage girls that met monthly to go on trips and have counseling sessions on how they cope with the illness.) The Make A Wish Foundation granted her a wish to Disney World for a week during the Christmas Holiday in 2008. She loved to travel. She’s been to Florida, Maine, Alabama, New Orleans, Las Vegas, St. Croix, US Virgin Islands. She also loved seafood and Chipotle. Her favorite color was Hot Pink. Shanay and her maternal grandmother nicknamed each other “My Buddy.” Her Uncle Kevin nicknamed her “Mookie.” Shanay’s smile could light up a room. Her sweet disposition made her very memorable to the hospital staff, family and friends. Shanay is survived by her father, Tim Cook, mother, Karen Wright-Cook, sister, Shauntay Verrett (Kevin), brother, Tarell Cook, nephew, Ayden, nieces, Londyn and Amiyah, paternal grandmother, Mary Cook and God-mother, Elita (Gidget) Williams and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. She is truly missed by many, but we all know she’s with her Buddy and is in no more pain. The family would like to extend their appreciation and gratitude towards all who has extended well wishes and condolences during this heartfelt time. So grateful we’ve had these years with such a beautiful, loving, caring, sweet daughter Shanay. So much love and memories were developed and cherished with her smiling heart. Thank-you Heavenly Father for blessing us with our sweet hearted daughter. She’s always in our hearts. Love You Always Shanay!!
