Shirley Annette Currin Byrd
August 30th, 1949 - September 9th, 2024
Shirley Annette Currin Byrd, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and respected educator, peacefully passed away on September 9, 2024, in Falls Church, VA, at the age of 75. Born on August 30, 1949, in Oxford, NC, Annette's life was a testament to love, commitment, and joy.
Annette is survived by her devoted husband of 52 years, William Enoch Byrd, Jr.; her treasured daughters, Ida Elizabeth Byrd Ahrens and Emily Elaine Byrd; her son-in-law, Patrick Joseph Ahrens; and her adored granddaughters, Olivia Grey Heiselmoyer and Isabella Byrdie Ahrens. She is also survived by her sister, Wanda Currin Hancock. Annette was preceded in death by her parents, Basil Stangrey Currin and Elizabeth Gray McGee Currin.
A lifelong advocate for education, Annette earned her B.A. in Education from East Carolina University (ECU) in 1972 and dedicated 38 years to teaching, retiring from Gar-Field Senior High School in Woodbridge, VA, where she specialized in special education. Her unwavering dedication and vibrant spirit made a lasting impact on both her students and colleagues.
Known for her humor and lively personality, Annette brought joy to those around her. She had a special fondness for McDonald’s Happy Meals and Diet Coke and cherished her time with her family, especially her granddaughters. Annette also enjoyed ECU football and baseball games, dancing, steamed shrimp, coffee, and the companionship of her beloved pets.

A memorial service to celebrate Annette's life will be held on Saturday, September 28, at 10:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. within Columbia Gardens Cemetery at the 3411 Event Center, 3411 Arlington Blvd., Arlington, VA 22201. Event parking is located just beyond the event center, follow road to first right, then turn into the gravel/grass lot.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Annette’s honor to the American Cancer Society and/or the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI).
Annette’s legacy of love, laughter, and dedication will forever be cherished by all who knew her. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered. May she rest in peace.
