Shirley was born to Alvin Karl & Connie (Lloyd) Lechtenberg in Central, Idaho. She grew up on the family farm along with her twin brother and two sisters. She attended her school years in Central, Idaho. After graduation, she met Dean Cecil Coombs on a blind date and it was love at first sight for both of them. They were married on June 4, 1947 in the Logan LDS Temple. In 1950 they moved to Caldwell, Idaho to homestead north of Caldwell in Sand Hollow. They built their home and there they raised their family. Shirley loved to crochet, cook, can the many vegetables from her garden, quilt and clean house. She did a lot of gardening even though it wasn’t her favorite thing to do. She was a member of the Black Canyon Branch until the Middleton 1st ward was created. She had many church callings including playing the organ & piano and Boise LDS temple worker. On February 9, 1986 Dean suddenly passed away. Even though her children were close by, she spent seven lonely years without him. A long-time friend, Perry Christensen, who had recently lost his wife, came and asked her to marry him. They were married on February 27, 1993 in Boise, Idaho. In her eyes she gained a whole new family and treated them just as her own. Shirley and Perry did a lot of traveling and enjoyed their time together. They took great care of her elderly parents who lived next door. She was a cancer survivor who had many other health issues. She took care of Perry after he had a stroke. Because of medical issues they moved to The Cottages of Middleton four years ago. She is survived by her husband, Perry Christensen, four sons: Brent (Brenda) Coombs, Caldwell; Bruce (Bonny) Coombs, Orem, UT, Dwight (Gerri) Coombs, Boise; Mark (Susan) Coombs, Caldwell, and her daughter, Uarda, Meridian; 26 grandchildren and 57 great-grandchildren; her step-children and their families; her twin brother, Kay Lechtenberg, Blanding, UT, her sister Carol (Arlin) Hadley, Syracuse, UT. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Linda (stillborn); her husband, Dean C. Coombs; her parents, Alvin and Connie Lechtenberg; her sister and brother-in-law, Joy and Sid Gilbert and her sister-in-law, Donna Lechtenberg. Shirley’s viewing will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, December 12, 2014 at Flahiff Funeral Chapel, Caldwell,. and from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. at the Church. Her funeral will be held Saturday, December 13, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. in the Middleton downtown LDS Chapel, 309 W Main Street, Middleton, Idaho. Burial will follow at the Middleton Cemetery.
