Spero William Calos Spero William Calos went to be with his Lord on April 5, 2012, just 3 weeks shy of his 90th birthday. He was gregarious, vibrant, lover of life and left a mark in the hearts of everyone he met. He will always serve as a true inspiration to his family and friends. Spero was best known for his love of etymology, the study of words. He was a colorful writer and an avid reader. Spero loved dancing and party-going, and made friends everywhere he went. Spero was born April 25, 1922, in Kenmare, ND, and raised in Palmetto, FL, where he worked on the family dairy farm throughout his childhood until he joined the military. Spero was a 22-year veteran for the US Army, serving in WWII and the Korean War, earning a Purple Heart. He retired from the military as a Major, and then went on to receive his BS degree in education from UNC. Spero dedicated his civilian career to the NC Revenue Department. Spero had a penchant for traveling. He visited Indonesia, Germany, Brazil, and Australia to name a few, not to mention trips to Greece. He continued his diligent exercise regime until the end, performing his morning calisthenics and brisk walks. Spero was an active member of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral, and was an active member of the Civil War Roundtable, Friendship Force, Elwood P. Dowd Society, and the Charlotte Greek Senior Group. He is predeseased by his wife Tula Paul Kaperonis Calos. Spero leaves behind his children Maria Calos Wolfe (Jim), Angela Calos and Spero W. Calos, Jr. (Ellen), and 3 grandchildren Adrienne Ingram Pilz (Nicholas), Jessica Marie Wolfe, and Demitroula Angela Wolfe.
