Stanley Martin Herman
September 23rd, 1938 - April 24th, 2024
Stanley Martin Herman of LaSalle, Colorado
Stanley was born in Yuma, Colorado on September 23, 1938 to Frank and Viola (Ferguson) Herman. He had an older brother, Roger. Stanley left this world on April 24, 2024.
Stanley grew up on the family farm Northeast of Yuma, Colorado. Throughout his childhood, he and his brother kept busy working on the farm and ranch. They gathered eggs, ground corn for feed, fed horses and milked cows. His favorite dog was Penny and his favorite pony was Silver.
Stan attended school in Yuma and participated in wrestling, football and rodeo. He was President of the FFA Chapter, as well as Student Body President. He made it to state in wrestling twice and was the district wrestling champion in 1956. Stanley competed in rodeo throughout his high school years on his treasured roping horse, Champ. After high school, he continued to rodeo – rode bare backs, saddle broncs and bulls and in later years was a team roper.
Stanley attended college in Fort Collins, Colorado at Colorado A&M (Aggies). There he competed on the college rodeo team. He won the bull riding evet at the Colorado A&M Skyline Stampede in 1958. After three years, he returned to the family ranch when his father became ill.
On April 12, 1959, he married his high school sweetheart, Donna Kohlmeier. From this union were born four children; Andy, Julie, Loree and James. As the children grew, Stanley enjoyed many fun times with the family. They spent their weekends at gymkhanas and ropings and enjoyed many family vacations. Stanley was a true lover of animals, including his favorite dog, Mandy and the many horses that he rode throughout his lifetime.
In 1969, the family moved to Grand Junction where Stanley worked as a field man for Colorado Farm Bureau, covering the western slope. A year later, the family returned to Yuma where he continued to work for Farm Bureau. Eventually, he returned to the Herman family farm and ranch. Several years later it expanded; becoming Mill Iron Diamond Cattle Company. Stanley partnered in this business with his mother, Viola, his brother, Roger, Vern Haruf and Wayne Mekelburg.
In 1986, Stan and Donna left Yuma to move to the front range. He continued his employment in the cattle industry until his retirement. His greatest joy was spending time with his wife of 65 years, his four children and their spouses and his seven grandchildren; Andy (Robie), Julie (Roger) and their children; Shad (Hannah), Brandon (Cassidy), Loree (Jay) and their children Erin (Eric), Drew (Alexa), Tyler (Taylor), James (Denise) and their children Lexi (Nate), and Maci. He attended many sporting events, theater performances and dance competitions and he was Pappy to all of his grandchildren and his four great-grandchildren; Tate, Rowan, Nolan and Jackson.
Stanley was a member of the Lions Club and Young Republicans. He was a lifelong member and served as an elder many years in the Presbyterian Church, USA. He was a lifelong Bronco, CSU and Rockies fan and his favorite pastime was following the sport of rodeo.
In Stan’s words… “I just want to be remembered as a cowboy.”
