Obituary Stanley M. Cassan, 81, died peacefully on February 27th with his wife Debi by his side at their home in Carmel, CA. Stan was born on November 3, 1936, an only child, to Louis and Annie Cassan of Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Stan graduated with his M.D. from McGill University in Montreal in 1962. In 1963, he became a citizen of the United States and entered private practice in Flint, MI where he practiced medicine for 3 years. In 1969, he graduated as a resident in internal medicine from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. In 1970, he obtained his Ph.D. in respiratory medicine and pathology from the University of Minnesota and Mayo Graduate School. He then completed his fellowship in Pulmonary Diseases at Mayo Clinic in 1971 and finished a NIH research fellowship at Stanford in 1972. He served as an associate professor of medicine and director of the respiratory and medical intensive care units at UCLA from 1972 to 1979. He then pursued other opportunities for practicing medicine in Monterey, CA and at the local VA clinic. He also served as ships' physician for 30 years on many cruise lines, where he and his wife enjoyed many interesting and exciting adventures traveling the world. Stan loved being a doctor. Among his other passions, were his love of music, travel and running. In music, he attended the McGill Conservatory of Music in violin and performed in the Flint Symphony Orchestra. He participated in the Youth Leadership from Abroad Program in Israel as a teenager and many subsequent visits there cemented his love for Israel. He was a lifelong runner with four marathon finishes after the age of 65. Stan will always be loved and remembered for his intellect, his integrity, his gentleness and his compassion. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Debi(together 41 years). His family is grateful for the love and support of friends and the excellent, compassionate care of the doctors and nurses of Pacific Cancer Center and Hospice of the Central Coast.
