Stephanie joined her son, Daniel, in eternal peace on October 6, 2023. Although born in Hamilton, Ohio, she always considered herself a Charlotte native. She graduated from East Mecklenburg HS in 1966 where she was a Cheerleader, Student Government leader and recipient of numerous awards for volunteering her time. While in High School she began her interest in nursing by serving over 1,000 volunteer hours as a Candy Striper at Charlotte Memorial Hospital. Stephanie graduated from East Carolina University in 1970 with a BSN degree. While at ECU, she was President of her sorority, Chi Omega, with whom she had a lifelong relationship. She was also chosen as a “fraternity sweetheart” and on the homecoming court. Upon graduation, she was selected to “Who’s Who in Colleges and Universities” for her leadership, community service and extra curricular activities. After college, she worked as a nurse in Fayetteville and Greenville while her husband, Ed, was in the Army and Graduate School. They returned to Charlotte and she began a 28 year career with Presbyterian/Novant Hospitals in the Emergency Room where she could apply her care and compassion. She had an uncanny ability to relate to everyone which put strangers at ease during their times of crisis. As the consummate volunteer, Stephanie served as PTA President at Cotswold Elementary and in numerous parent capacities at First Ward, Rama and McClintock schools. Her willingness to give of her time carried over to Sardis Presbyterian Church where she served as a Deacon, Sunday School Teacher, Young Adult Activity coordinator, Junior/Senior High Youth Advisor and on many committees. Stephanie was an avid camper, taking trips from Florida to Maine with Ed, Daniel and Chase. She and her mother ultimately purchased RV’s and settled in outside Boone off the Blue Ridge Parkway in the community of Deep Gap, NC. While spending 26 summers in the mountains, she endeared herself to many local families. As a lifelong member of Chi Omega Sorority, Stephanie was an advisor to literally hundreds of young ladies at ECU, Appalachian State, Wingate, Winthrop and Queens Colleges. She also spent time as a National Advisor for XO assisting programs across the Country. At the Chi Omega National convention, she was awarded special recognition for her 50 years of devotion to the principles of XO sisterhood. Stephanie is survived by her husband of 53 years, Ed, daughter, Chase Hanks (Tanner), mother, Georgiana Standafer, brother, Bruce Standafer (Carol) and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at Sardis Presbyterian Church, 6100 Sardis Road, 28270 on Saturday, October 21, 2023 at 12:00 pm with visitation and reception following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to: Chi Omega Foundation, 3395 Players Club Pkwy, Memphis, TN, 38125 or (give.chiomega.com).
