Stephen Hyatt

Obituary Stephen Hyatt passed away at his home on March 18th at age 90. Stephen is preceded in death by his parents, Delwyn and Gladys, and brothers Richard and Robert. He is survived by his wife Elizabeth, daughters Susan and Karen, granddaughter Annie, brother David, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Stephen's first job was working in a greenhouse for twenty-five cents an hour. He went on to deliver newspapers in Plattsburg NY where he graduated from Plattsburgh High School. On his 18th birthday, he joined the U.S. Army and served in the 2nd Armored Division, the 3rd Armored Division, 4th Army and the 508 Airborne Regimental Combat team as a paratrooper. He entered as a Private and rose to the rank of 1st Lieutenant. Stephen married Elizabeth, the love of his life, at St. John's Episcopal Church in Bangor, Maine over 60 years ago. He met her at the Canterbury Club while attending the University of Maine in Orono. Stephen received a BA degree in Sociology from the University of Maine; an MS degree in Rural Sociology from Pennsylvania State University; and was all but dissertation for a PhD at Boston University. He started his career at Farmer's Union in Denver and was a Boy Scout Executive for the General Sullivan Council in Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Stephen was a professor of Sociology, Anthropology and Rural Sociology at the University of Maine at Orono and the Bangor Campus of the University of Maine for 30 years when he retired as Professor Emeritus. He truly loved teaching and arranged numerous field trips for his students and faculty into Northern Canada where they lived with the Cree Indians. His many hobbies included painting historical religious icons, being a rabid ice hockey fan, especially the University of Maine Black Bears and the Colorado Eagles, researching Native American culture, and archaeology. He conducted explorations at Fort George in Castine, Maine for many years and has donated the artifacts and research materials to the Castine Historical Society. Since retirement, Stephen has enjoyed the Rocky Mounty West since he and Elizabeth moved to Fort Collins, Colorado. Stephen served as the Vice President of the Loveland Archeological Society, volunteered for the Fort Collins Salvation Army, and was a member of the Civil War Round Table. Stephen felt fortunate to have travelled to England, Scotland, Finland, Norway, and Sweden with Elizabeth and went on too many road trips to count in their RV. Many hours were spent at their cottage at Green Lake, Maine. When asked what his greatest accomplishment was, Stephen smiled with pride and said his daughters; his granddaughter also gave him great joy. While in Accent Care Hospice, Stephen was pleased to meet very special people who worked wonders every day. His family is truly grateful for their support. No service is planned.
