Stephen Allen Worrell
May 25th, 1944 - April 17th, 2013
Stephen Allen Worrell, 68, of Treasure Island, FL passed away on April 17, 2013 in Hospice at Bay Pines VA hospital in St. Petersburg. Steve was born on May 25, 1944 in Schenectady, NY to DeWitt and Jonell Stewart Worrell and grew up with older brother Dewitt in Philadelphia. Steve attended Maryville College, TN where he played football and joined the UTS fraternal organization, making many lifelong friends. After college, Steve served his country in Vietnam for the US Army and returned a highly decorated veteran with 2 Purple Hearts, Silver and Bronze Stars, among other infantry honors. Steve married Martha Bailey. Over the years, they lived and worked and made wonderful friends in several cities around the US including Clearwater FL, Atlanta GA, Chicago IL, Huntsville AL Memphis TN, Hartwell GA, and St. Petersburg FL. In 1979, Steve completed a Bachelor's degree from Georgia State University in Education. Steve was a respected wood worker and builder. He was also a mentor and generous friend. Steve was a long time supporter of Disabled Veterans and Vietnam Veteran Associations. Steve was a loving family member and his help, his humor, his friendship and honor will be dearly missed by many. Steve is preceded in death by his father and mother, Dewitt Andrews Worrell and Jonell Stewart Worrell, and his brother Dewitt Stewart Worrell. Steve is survived by his loving wife Martha Bailey Worrell, sister-in-law, Carolyn Worrell of Lexington VA, niece and nephews: Melinda Worrell Spiller (Chris) Knoxville TN, Stewart Stivers Worrell (Suzanne) Savannah GA, Robert Andrews Worrell (Courtney) Richmond VA. He is also survived by his Aunt Barbara Stewart and family -Bowling Green KY. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the VMI KEYDET Club for the DeWitt S. Worrell Scholarship Fund at VMI (Virginia Military Institute), PO Box 932, Lexington, VA 24450 (Tel 800-444-1839) or to the organization of your choice. His family and friends will celebrate his life with a military service on May 25, 2013 @ 10:45 AM at Bay Pines Cemetery, 10000 Bay Pines Blvd, St. Petersburg, FL 33708. An additional memorial service will be held in Hartwell, GA at the 1st Presbyterian Church ( 41 S. Carter St. Hartwell, GA 30643 tel 706-376-8314) on Sat, May 4th @ 2:30 PM with refreshments following the service. David C.
