Steven Lee Collins May 3, 1954 – March 23, 2021 Steven Lee Collins,66, from Arlington, VA, born in Elkhart, IN, to William H Collins and Loretta M (Weaver) Grover passed this past March 23, 2021 at Virginia Hospital Center after an extended illness. Steve graduated from Concord H.S. in 1972 and attended Ball State University graduating in 1976 with a degree in communications later receiving his Master’s in Engineering Administration. Steve was a beloved member of the local LGBTQ community. Steve was hard working and enjoyed his music. He was highly active in Washington D.C.’s LGBTQ band DCDD (D.C. Different Drummers). He was a percussionist and participated in DCDD musical productions for decades and was honored to be in the parade for both of President Barack Obama’s inaugurations. Steve loved bowling like his dad and was secretary of his league for several years. Steve and Mike often hosted the bowling end of season banquets at their home in Arlington, VA. Steve was a wonderful husband, father, brother, and a caring and loving friend. Steve is survived by his husband, Mike Merena, daughter Nichole Collins, son Mathew (Erin) Collins, sisters Linda Miller and Tracy Eash, numerous nieces and nephews, friends and loved ones. Donations can be made to DCDD at www.dcdd.org in Steven’s name if desired. A celebration of life will be held later and place yet to be decided.
