Steven Valavanis
April 2nd, 1927 - May 5th, 2017
Steven William Valavanis, of Cocoa, Florida, passed away on May 5,2017. Steven was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. Born on April 2, 1927 in Braddock, PA, Steven attended both Greek and American school. He was a proud WW II Navy Veteran on the USS Leyte from 1944 to 1947 where he was known to be "the best boxer on his ship” and the Captain’s Greek translator. He received his Masters degree in Political Science from Rollins College and was a teacher at Cocoa High School in the 1960's and an Eastern Florida State College professor for 30 years. Steven contributed to the development of the Brevard Federation of Teacher's Union in Brevard County where he served as President for many years. He was also a proud Rockledge City Councilman. Steven is pre-deceased by his former wife Dell Valavanis, sisters Sylvia Newham, Betty Conway, Vera Valavanis, and his grandson Steven Rumbaugh. Steven is survived by his daughter, Natallie McCann, son Jason Valavanis, his daughter April Rumbaugh, and seven grandchildren: Sean Spencer, Justin Rumbaugh, Courtney Rumbaugh, Victor Valavanis, Karsten Rumbaugh, Max Valavanis, Nicole Rumbaugh, and Madison Spencer, his great granddaughter. Steven will be sorely missed and was deeply loved. A Navy memorial service will be held at 9:30am on June 23rd, 2017 at the Cape Canaveral National Cemetery in Mims.
