Susan "Kitten" Kay Kaan (née Schroeder), born on May 26, 1946, in Oak Park, Illinois, and passed away on April 3, 2024, in Wheat Ridge, Colorado, was a remarkable woman whose zest for life and spirit left a permanent mark on everyone she met. Susan, known affectionately as "Kitten" by those closest to her, navigated through life with a unique blend of grace, directness, and sassy humor that endeared her to many.
A woman of many talents, Susan's career journey was as diverse as it was accomplished. She began her professional life as a travel agent, channeling her passion for exploring new places into creating unforgettable experiences for her clients. She then transitioned into the role of a ballroom dance instructor, where her love for movement enriched the lives of those she taught. Finally, Susan worked as a bakery clerk, where her warmth and meticulous nature made her a favorite among patrons and colleagues alike. Throughout her varied careers, Susan garnered numerous awards and achievements, but it was the deep connections she formed and the lives she touched that stood as her true legacy.
Susan's academic achievements were marked by the attainment of a Bachelor's degree, a testament to her commitment to personal growth and education. In every field she ventured into, she brought with her a diligence and a flair for excellence that left a lasting impact.
At the heart of Susan's life were her relationships with her family and friends. She was a devoted mother to Michaela Enlow (Rene) and David Kastens (Laura), a cherished grandmother to Matthew, Johnathan, David, Courtney, Danielle, Josef, Trevor, and a loving great grandmother to Nebula. Her brother, Gerald Schroeder, also held a special place in her life. Susan's interactions with her family were characterized by her ability to make every gathering feel like a celebration of life's simple joys.
Susan's personality held many contrasting traits that ultimately came together to complement her fierce spirit. To those meeting her for the first time, she was immediately welcoming, making them feel as though they had been friends for years. Yet, she was particular in her tastes—preferring her drinks with three ice cubes and a wedge of lime, and never settling for less. Her honesty and sass were tempered by a genuine kindness that made her company all the more enjoyable.
An avid storyteller, Susan had a gift for weaving tales out of everyday moments, always reminding those around her of life's beauty and wonder. Her interests reflected her vivacious personality—ballroom dancing, traveling, and an unapologetic love for shopping, especially for items with cheetah print or shoes. She was a fan of game shows and relished the challenge of a good game of solitaire. Yet, it was her time spent with family and friends, reminiscing and creating new memories, that she treasured the most.
Susan "Kitten" Kay Kaan's legacy is one of love, laughter, and an unwavering spirit that inspired all who knew her. She navigated life's dances with a full spirit, leaving behind memories that would be cherished and celebrated by her beloved family and the many lives she touched. Her remarkable journey through life serves as a reminder of the importance of embracing every moment with joy, passion, and a hint of sass.
