Susan Sutherland McLain
August 21st, 1927 - December 31st, 2013
Susan Sutherland McLain of Tampa, FL, passed away on December 31, 2013. Suzy was born on August 21, 1927, in Hayneville, AL. She is survived by her loving husband Mark, her siblings Betty Cook and Jim Sutherland (Jetti) of Prattville, AL and numerous nieces and nephews. Suzy moved to Tampa from Albany, GA in 1958 to serve as the office manager for the architectural firm for Harry “Bo” MacEwen. She earned her B.L.S. at the University of Tampa. In 1976, she was one of the founders and served as the first president of the prestigious Athena Society, initially formed to support the Equal Rights Amendment. She was active in the community as a member of the Board of Trustees at MacDonald Training Center, Board of Trustees of Hillsborough Association of Retarded Citizens, Board of Fellows and Board of Counselors at the University of Tampa, and member of the City of Tampa Civil Service Commission. She volunteered for Meals on Wheels and served in the mentoring program for the Boys and Girls Clubs. She supported the arts as a member of Las Damas de Arte and the National Museum for Women in the Arts. Suzy enjoyed tennis and golf in her early years and was an avid reader and bridge player. She was a gourmet cook and hostess extraordinaire, making all who entered her home feel welcomed and pampered. A strong role model to professional women and an outspoken advocate for women’s issues, Suzy McLain will be sadly missed by those whose lives she touched.
