Ted Gearhart

September 18th, 1938 - August 6th, 2024

Ted Gearhart, of Charlotte, passed away on August 6, 2024. Born in East Stroudsburg, PA, Ted was an only child in an otherwise large extended and loving family. When his parents moved to Allentown, PA, Ted grew up excelling in music and enjoyed playing trumpet in the school and community bands. This extended to Tedā€™s military service, where he joined the Navy School of Music and played trumpet on several aircraft carriers.

Tedā€™s dream to be a successful career jazz musician was sidelined by his new career goals that took him to Muhlenberg College for a degree in Economics. After graduation, he began a long career at the Government Accountability Office (GAO). During his career at GAO, Ted earned his CPA and a masters in Economics. He headed projects auditing the IRS; reporting on energy policy; and studying the feasibility of the computer systems embedded in military weapon systems.

Ted met his current wife Leslie Aronovitz at GAO, and after a 15-year friendship, they got married in 1998. For 26 years, they traveled to many corners of the world, and for 15 summers in a row, they took bicycle trips throughout Europe. When Leslie retired, they eventually moved to Charlotte, where Ted gave generously of his time to several non-profits, including Make-A-Wish Foundation, the Alzheimerā€™s Association, and the Shepherdā€™s Center. He also devoted a good portion of his time as a board member for Roswell Place, and after 5 years, he knew how every pipe and system worked in his condo. The other 14 families in the building called him ā€œSuperā€ and insisted that he lived up to every definition of the word.

There will be a graveside service for Ted on Sunday, August 11th at 10:30am at the Hebrew Cemetery, located at 1801 Statesville Ave., Charlotte, NC 28206. Attendees will have the option of joining an escorted motorcade to the cemetery from the Hankins and Whittington Funeral Home, located at 1111 East Blvd., Charlotte NC 28203. Please arrive at the funeral home at 9:45am for a 10:00 departure.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Healthy Charlotte Alliance; 338 S. Sharon Amity Road, #504; Charlotte, NC 28211, or to a charity of your choice.

At Hankins & Whittington Funeral Service, nestled in the historic heart of Dilworth, we have provided families in the Charlotte area with customizable memorial services for many years. Our services are crafted to honor your loved ones in ways that are both deeply meaningful and healing. Our rich history began in 1946 when Irvin W. Hankins and James B. Whittington took the reins of the Crouch Funeral Home. The growth of our service and the community's support led to our move in March 1963 to the current location—once St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, built in 1930. Our chapel, a cherished historic landmark within the storied Dilworth neighborhood, is renowned for being the only funeral home in Charlotte graced with its own chapel, echoing with decades of history and serenity.
