Terry Benjamin Lofsvold
February 15th, 1938 - March 9th, 2021
“Terry or TL” Benjamin Lofsvold was born in Spokane, Washington on February 15, 1938 to Doris “Churchy” Lofsvold and Gene Lofsvold. He was raised in Issaquah, Washington, and he graduated from Issaquah High School in 1956. He continued his education at Whitman College, where he was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. He graduated from Whitman College in 1960 with a B.S. in Physical Education. After a few years off, Terry went on to pursue a Master’s degree from Oregon State University. He graduated from Oregon State University in 1969 with a M.ed. in Recreation Administration. While at Whitman College, Terry met and married his first wife, Jane Griffiths. After 10 years of marriage, they divorced. All his life, Terry had a very big love of the outdoors. He also had a big love of sports, specifically football, running, snow skiing, and waterskiing. Throughout high school and his time at Whitman College, Terry played football and ran track. Upon graduating from Whitman College, Terry received two offers to play professional football: one from the Baltimore Colts and the other from the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Terry declined both offers. Terry held the Whitman College record for the 880m from 1956-1974. After graduating from Whitman College, Terry moved to Boise, Idaho to be with his family. Because he had a big love of the outdoors, Terry worked as Assistant Recreation Director for the City of Boise. He spent his winter months at Bogus Basin supervising the youth ski school instructors. This presented him with the opportunity to become a management trainee for Bogus Basin. Terry worked at Bogus Basin for 20 years, and he served as General Manager from 1984-1991. During his time at Bogus Basin, Terry was responsible for lowering the cost of season passes to be more affordable to residents in the Treasure Valley, and bringing more local families to the mountain. His mantra was “skiing is a lifetime sport,” so he focused a lot of his time on encouraging people of all ages to come give skiing a try. Terry’s biggest accomplishment was providing expert skiers more terrain to ski at night by installing lights on the backside of Shafer Butte (Superior Chair). Terry met his second wife, Carol Neal, while they were both working at Bogus Basin. They married on January 1, 1981. Together, they enjoyed hosting Monday Night Football parties and family BBQs. They also enjoyed waterskiing at Gilbert Lake and boating on Payette Lake. Terry enjoyed anything to do with cars--hosting Indy 500 parties, watching televised car races, and attending vintage car shows. He also collected his own fleet of cars, including vintage cars as well as sports cars. He loved cars so much that he worked for Peterson Motors in Boise, Idaho selling cars for five years. At his Indy 500 parties, Terry would encourage his guests to drive a fun vehicle to the party so that they could have a mini car show in the driveway. Terry attended the Monterey Historic Auto races more than 15 times. He attended the historic auto races with his friend, Tom Morgan. He sometimes participated as a member of Tom Morgan’s pit crew. While living in Boise, Terry contributed some of his time to philanthropic activities. He served as a member of the Idaho Travel Council, President of the Idaho Ski Areas Association, and a board member of the Boise Area Chamber of Commerce. Terry was also a member of the National Ski Patrol Association, and a member of the Bogus Basin Ski Club. In 1998, Terry and Carol moved to Grand Junction, Colorado. Living in Colorado offered Terry numerous opportunities for outdoor adventures. He and Carol frequently hiked through the local mica mines. They also embarked on many car trips to Moab, Utah to hike in Arches and Canyonlands National Parks. Terry also continued his love of skiing at new mountains, including Powderhorn, Aspen, and Telluride. He decided to work part-time for Fedex in the mornings so that he could ski the rest of the day at Powderhorn. He would work the earliest shift possible so that he had enough time after work to go home, eat breakfast, and be on the mountain as soon as they opened. One of the most fun things Terry did in Colorado was riding the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railway to see the fall colors. Some of Terry’s favorite memories were of vacations he took with Carol as well as with friends. Terry and Carol loved to vacation at their condo in McCall, Idaho; along the Oregon Coast; and, in National Parks where they would stay at the historic lodges. His favorite National Parks were Glacier and Yellowstone. Terry also enjoyed travelling to Kauai and staying in a home along the beach with Bill and Edie Morse. Terry was a natural-born storyteller. He loved to go into full detail to make sure you would know everything about the subject in question. Terry’s favorite hobbies were watching Boise State Bronco football games, reading the newspaper or auto magazines, and eating cinnamon rolls and all kinds of jam and syrup. Terry passed away in his sleep on March 9, 2021. He was preceded in death by his parents, Doris and Gene Lofsvold. He is survived by his wife, Carol Lofsvold; his daughter, Brigette (Ed) Teets; his grandchildren, Kieron Teets and Eddie Teets (Kristina Lewis); his great-granddaughter, Addison Teets; and numerous other family members and friends. Per Terry’s wishes, he will be cremated, and his ashes will be spread at some of the places that he loved the most. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date for family and friends.
