Thomas Scott Clevenger
October 9th, 1940 - February 10th, 2018
Obituary Thomas Scott Clevenger was born in Eugene, Oregon in 1940. Although he passed away February 10, 2018 his kind heart and loving spirit are alive and well. Tom was an adventurous, curious person, he delighted in seeing and experiencing new places and cultures. His life was characterized by curiosity about the world around him and he loved to share these experiences with his family. His life attitude was "Work to live, not live to work" and he lived -- from zip lining in Cancun to eating "ubre" in Bolivia. An avid outdoorsman, Tom spent many happy days throughout his life hiking, hunting and fishing. He thoroughly enjoyed sharing these skills with his wife Josie and four children. He instilled this same love and appreciation for the outdoors, especially fishing, across the generations to his seven grandchildren. His proven fishing technique of stream walking has been passed down the line although his skill in casting around corners is difficult to master. No matter the topic, he was a kind, loving patient father who lived to share his knowledge, wisdom and experiences with his children. He excelled at gently pushing his family out of their comfort zones, whether it be travels to unique places, interesting discussions about new ideas and world events or talking about books. He inherited this love of reading from his grandfather, who he remembered sitting with stacks of books beside his chair. Tom loved to sit quietly reading and spending time with Josie. Tom's sensitive heart welled up over social injustice, a 13 inch rainbow trout, Hallmark movies and beautiful mountain scenery alike. Those who were privileged to know him have universally used words like "kind, good, great and wonderful" to describe him. A lifelong educator at heart, Tom taught his students, friends and family alike that the world was possible. And then he showed us. He gave us the gift of teaching us to look at the heart and soul of a person and consider them as individuals. We honor this loving father and husband who is so dearly loved by paying forward his kindness and patience in our own lives.
