Thomas Harold Hamm
June 25th, 1936 - July 31st, 2015
Thomas "Tommy" Hamm Sr. of Charlotte, NC died peacefully at home on Friday, July 31st, 2015 surrounded by family. Tommy was born in Roanoke, Virginia, on June 25th, 1936. He was lovingly raised by Thomas "Daddy Tom" and Ruth "Mama Ruby" Puckett. When he was 17 years old he joined the United States Marine Corps and served with the 5th Marines during the Korean War. After being honorably discharged from the Marines, he spent time in multiple occupations, including running a service station, driving race cars, and performing stunt driving in the movie "Thunder Road." He joined the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Department in 1966 on the recommendation of Sheriff Donald Stahl. During his many years there, he made many lifelong friends and had a positive influence on a number of deputies throughout the years. He remained at the Sheriff's Department for 28 years until retiring as a Major in 1994. While at the Sheriff's Department, he met his wife, Claudia Fox, and they were married on June 25th, 1982. After retiring, he later went on to work for the US Marshall's Service for another 9 years, retiring from there in 2004. He prided himself in hard work, integrity, and job knowledge. He had a strong sense of humor and a natural smile that could brighten a room. Even though his strength and mobility had diminished over his last few years, he was still a source of inspiration and laughter amongst family and friends. His death finally provided him relief from the pains that had afflicted him for so long. Those left to cherish his memory include his beloved wife of 33 years Claudia F. Hamm, his son Thomas D. "Big T" Hamm and wife Janet, daughter Lori H. Guardado and husband Jose "Pepe", son Thomas H. "Tom" Hamm Jr. and wife Elizabeth; his loving grandchildren Julia Hamm, Ashley Hamm, Robert "Bobby" Liggett, Colt Kimbrell, and Caitlyn "Caity Bug" Hamm and numerous great-grandchildren. Visitation is scheduled for Monday, August 3rd, 2015 from 5:00 - 7:00pm at Hankins & Whittington at 1111 East Blvd, Charlotte, NC 28203 - hankinsandwhittington.com.
