Thomas Johnston passed away Wednesday after a valiant battle with cancer. Tom was born in Washington D.C. and graduated from San Francisco State with a Master's degree in technical theater. Tom served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Cumorah, NY mission. He married his sweetheart in 1973. After teaching for 3 years in the drama department at Brigham Young University, he had a short career as Building Supervisor for the Church of Jesus Christ Of Latter-day Saints at the Oakland Interstake Center. He later became an enrolled agent doing tax preparation and was a member of the East Bay Association of Enrolled Agents. He enjoyed doing family history research and serving in his church as Family History Consultant and Oakland Temple worker. Tom is survived by his loving wife, Patricia "Trish", of 50 years; and his children Matt Johnston, Joe Johnston ( partner Melissa Edgren), Jill Lam (Man San "Sunny"), adopted son Paul Essel (Pearl). Grandchildren Mira Lockwood-Johnston, "Avery" Ben Lockwood-Johnston, Fiona Lam, Naomi Lam, Henry Lam, Percy Essel, Paden Essel, Primrose Essel. Brother James "Jim" Johnston, Stepsister Peg Steiner (Bob), Stepbrother Norm Hartz (Karen). Nephew Tom Johnston, Niece Nancy Warman (Byron), Great-Niece Kyalynn Johnston. Funeral Service will be on Thursday, Oct. 19, 2023, with 10am viewing, 11am service at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, San Ramon Ward Building at 5025 Crow Canyon Rd, San Ramon, CA 94582. Arrangements by Oak Park Hills Chapel. Burial to follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery. Family suggests family memorial gifts to Alzheimer's Research or The American Cancer Society.
