Tom Ryan Sr. of Mill Creek died December 30, 2011. He was born March 15, 1921 in Denver, Colorado. He moved to Seattle and attended Seattle Prep High School, where he excelled in academics, football, basketball and baseball; he continued his education by going to Seattle University. Tom earned a degree in English Literature while also playing varsity basketball as the starting point guard. He later became the varsity basketball coach at Seattle University. Tom earned a Masters degree in Science and Physical Education at the University of Washington. In 1944, he married his wife of 66 years, Mary and began their family. Tom served as a Lieutenant in the US Navy, where he participated in some of the most epic battles in World War II. After the war, Tom worked for the Seattle Parks Department, and then began a career in Parks and Recreation with King County. During his 25 year career, he rose through the ranks to serve as the Superintendent of King County Parks Department and Deputy Executive of King County. During his career, Tom received some no awards and honors such as; Outstanding Public Employee in the field of Public Parks for King County (1968-1969) award from the Municipal League of Seattle and King County and served as the Chairman of the Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission from 1984-85. Tom and Mary raised seven boys. In retirement, they enjoyed traveling and loved spending time with their family. Mary passed away on December 29, 2010. Tom is survived by their 7 sons; Tom Jr. of Woodinville, Tim (Kathi) of Bothell, Dan (Nancy) of Chandler, AZ, Rick (Judy) of Mountlake Terrace, Rob (Mikki) of Arlington, Terry (Roberta) of Mill Creek, Kevin (Vuthy) of Snohomish: 22 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
