Thomas R. Sorbero

Mr. Thomas R. Sorbero, 86, of Amsterdam, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, May 4, 2018 at his home. Born in Amsterdam, NY on February 9, 1932, he was the son of the late Salvatore and Rubina Theliaferro Sorbero. A lifelong Amsterdam resident, Tom was a graduate of the former Wilbur H. Lynch High School, class of 1950. He served in the Army National Guard and was employed by the NY Telephone Company for 30 years until his retirement. He also was a licensed Insurance Broker. Tom was a communicant of the former St. Michael the Archangel Church and St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, where he served on the Holy Name Society. Tom was a volunteer all of his life, dedicating time to his community in various capacities. He served as Accessor and Town Councilman for the Town of Amsterdam, was awarded JC Man of the Year, was the co-founder of CYO Basketball in Amsterdam and was currently serving as the Second Vice President of the Montgomery County Office for Aging Board. He also loved the game of tennis, and played the game often. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him. He is survived by his wife, Ann Marie Criscuolo Sorbero; his son, Martin Sorbero and his wife Carol; four grandchildren, Dr. Cheryl Sorbero and her husband Dr. Ramsey Elhosn, David Sorbero and his wife Abby, Christopher Sorbero and his wife Carla, Phillip Sorbero; four great grandchildren, Christian, Gabriella, Luca and Lola; his siblings, Carmella Brooks and Anthony Sorbero; nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his brothers and sisters, Frank Sorbero, Mary Murrane, Lucia Nocian, Joseph Sorbero, John Sorbero and Rose Sorbero. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Wednesday, May 9, 2018 at 1:30p.m. at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, 156 East Main Street, Amsterdam, NY with the Rev. Jeffrey L’Arche, M.S. as celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Michael’s Cemetery. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 10:30a.m. - 12:30p.m. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, NY 12010.
