Tom Diermier
September 7th, 1924 - June 10th, 2019
Tom Diermier, 95, of Ione, passed away suddenly on June 10. Tom was born in Dupree, South Dakota, on March 7, 1924, the eldest son of Frank and Dorothy Diermier. He had three other siblings, none of whom are still living. He and his wife, Betty, who preceded him in death in 2013, were married 69 years and had five children. He is survived by his dear companion, Doris Toth, also of Ione, as well as his children, Jeannette Radcliffe, Mike (Cathy) Diermier, Dan Diermier, Don (Mary) Diermier, nine grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren and numerous nephews and nieces. His other daughter, Mary Jane Peck, also preceded him in death. Tom was well-known and well-liked in his community. He was a life member and past commander of the San Andreas VFW, Post 2600. He served for several years as their chaplain, and was involved in many of their volunteer activities. He was also a life member of the Tin Can Sailors. He was an avid card player, fisherman, and loved to read. Tom loved life and people of all ages. He was invited to speak at Brett Hart High School several times about his experiences in World War II. His most recent speaking engagement was at the Ione Veterans Memorial Park in Ione where he is also memorialized on a plaque. He was a Navy veteran, and served on the USS Patterson and later on the USS Portland. There will be a memorial service June 29, 2019 at 3 p.m. at the San Andreas VFW, Post 2600, 156 W. St. Charles Street, followed by a dinner and celebration of his life in their hall. In lieu of flowers, donations in his name may be made to VFW Post 2600, or the Calaveras County Senior Center.
